The sparring partner a founder actually needs

You do not sharpen against nothing. The role only works if the other side has weight and no stake in your answer.

What is a sparring partner, for someone who leads? Someone who takes your reasoning seriously enough to test it, at your level, without wanting anything from the outcome. Not an opponent: they want you to win, and they know that agreement is not how you get there.

Three roles get confused here, and they are different jobs.

A coach gets you talking. A sparring partner answers, and holds.

What makes the resistance worth anything

Nemeth and colleagues found in 2001 that authentic dissent outperforms assigned dissent: a devil's advocate who has been told to argue the other side produces less useful thinking than someone who genuinely holds it. Applied here, it means a sparring partner who is being polite about disagreeing is not doing the job, and one who is paid by you has a quiet reason to be polite.

The three conditions

Why we built five and not one

The last condition is the one that is hard to arrange with people, and easy to arrange deliberately. Five Peers convenes five seats that argue from distinct methods, chosen for what you do not do, so the resistance does not come from one temperament. It is not a person and does not pretend to be. It answers back, which is the part most tools skip.
